Cancun Part 5

Cancun Day 5 - Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres "Island of Women" is an island very close to Cancun, only 15 minutes ferry ride. When I was reading on where to catch the ferry, it sounded complicated. People suggested to take the bus from the hotel zone to downtown Cancun and then take a taxi to Puerto Juarez since the port is not within walking distance.  However, there are easier ways, UltraMar has three departure locations in the hotel zone:  Playa Tortugas (Kukulcan Blvd. Km. 7), El Embarcadero (Kukulcan Blvd. Km. 4), and Playa Caracol (Kukulcan Blvd. Km. 9.5). We found that out when we were in Cancun inside the booklet that Charlie gave to us. The prices are the same for the three departure locations $17 round-trip. Note that best to take the ferry from Playa Tortugas because it goes directly to Isla Mujeres whereas from Playa Caracol, the ferry made a stop in Playa Tortugas. We didn't know about this so we took the ferry from Playa Caracol.

The 15 min ride to Isla Mujeres was very nice, great photo opportunity! The port in the early morning, very quiet and calm:

On the ferry ride to Isla Mujeres:

On the ferry ride, looking over Cancun hotel zone:

Once we walked out of the port, the shopping and restaurant area were located right next to it. We randomly picked a restaurant with English menu and had our lunch before we navigate the island. The food in this restaurant was just average!

After lunch, we walked to a near-by golf cart rental place to rent a golf cart for the day for 400 pesos. We filled out some paperwork and hubby gave his driver's license and we were all set to go! Remember to check the condition of the cart before you leave the shop to make sure you will not get charged for previous damages!

We had our map with us and the island was very easy to navigate! It had two main roads to get out of the shopping area, see the map below:

We chose to head to the Turtle Farm and Garrafon Park side to Punta Sur and return on the undeveloped side to make a loop around the island. Our golf-cart can only travel less than 35 miles per hour so move aside to let other cars pass by! It was really relaxing to drive around on the golf-cart and stop as we wish!

I took this picture while on the golf-cart, the back is Cancun!

We pulled over and take some photos of Garrafon Park:

Garrafon Park on the back:

We arrived Punta Sur where is the tip of the island. We "parked' our golf cart and took a walk around this area. There were some souvenir shops here too but the prices were not as good as in Cancun.

Hubby with the giant iguana statue:

The turquoise crystal-clear water and the blue sky...my day can't be better than this!

Golf-cart parking lot haha:

We headed back on the "undeveloped" side. This side of the island have a lot of land for sale and there were some nice mansions like the picture below. However, right next to those nice mansions, there were houses that looked falling apart where locals lived.

Guess this house haven't been used for a long time...the roof is all covered with grass:

The water was so beautiful here that we pulled over every few hundred feet to take pictures!

This is what I called "Old Man and the Sea":

Empty white sand beach!!!!!

There were locals selling shell crafts outside their home, very inexpensive too!

More beautiful view of the crystal clear water!

We really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere here and so nice to be on our own pace!

Crystal-clear water!

Our drive back to the shopping area of the island, we passed by this local airport.

We returned our golf-cart right away so we don't need to look for parking in the busy shopping area. Our loop around the island took us less than 2 hours!

The shopping area consisted of 2-3 major streets filled with souvenir shops on both side of the street! I got some seashell earrings to bring back home for friends and family :)

As you might know, I love pink so I took this picture of this beautiful PINK flowers!

We spent at least 2 hours going in each store to shop! We catch the 4:30pm ferry back to Playa Tortuga (our round-trip ticket valid on all three ports in the hotel zone area).

While we were waiting for our ferry to depart, one more photo of Isla Mujeres!

We had a great time in Isla Mujeres, it was such a beautiful and relaxing island! After we got back to Cancun, we took the bus back to our hotel and rest a bit before we head out for dinner.  Dinner time, we went to the restaurant that was recommended by our photographer. It was within walking distance from our hotel located on the back of Domino's Pizza. We never know there was a restaurant on the back!!! This is a popular seafood restaurant that locals go and the restaurant had early bird specials.

View of the marina and the lagoon sitting on our table:

They do have an English menu so no problem ordering food! Here were what we ordered!

Food was good and prices were cheaper than the touristy restaurants!

Cancun Part 4

Cancun Part 4 - Coba and Tulum

When I woke up this morning, I ran to the balcony to check out the weather and crossed my fingers for sunny weather! It was beautiful out; perfect day for adventure. I really need the great weather because today I booked a tour to climb the Mayan ruin - Coba and visit the only Mayan site near the water - Tulum! The logistics were the same as Chichen Itza. We waited for the hotel pick-up bus in the hotel lobby around 7:10 am and once we dropped off at Plaza la Fiesta, I immediately ran to the back counter to get our tickets. This time we were in the front of the line :) We boarded the bus, it turned out to be a full bus again! Our bus stopped at one of the natural water parks and then people split up for different tours. We boarded a van this time since our group was relatively small. There were a total of 2 vans for the same Coba + Tulum tour, total less than 20 people. The van was clean and very comfortable. In an an hour and a half or so we arrived at Coba!

When I got off the van, I saw few souvenir shops and then the entrance to what it looked like a forest - time for insect repellent spray! Our tour guide got our tickets and off we off, we hike into Coba! Within minutes of walk, we saw the ruins already!

A smaller pyramid:

Our tour guide explained to us that the tallest pyramid - Nohoch Mul is located inside the "jungle", the walking trail to there is about 1.5 miles so the round-trip is 3 miles. We had three options: 1. walk, 2. rent a bicycle for 25 pesos a day, or 3. hire a driver of the tricycle for 75 pesos. We picked the tricycle option with a driver, I never seen a tricycle like this before: 2 passenger seats on the front and the "driver" on the back:

It was really fun to be in the tricycle, we breezed through the forest while some of our group members were still walking. I rather saved my strength to climb the pyramid haha! We were there early in the morning and the walking trail had trees on both sides so it was warm - not hot! We passed by many bike riders and there were parking places for bikes too!

Our first stop was a temple and the ball court:

We heard about the same story about the ball court in Chichen Itza but this time we were very close to see the "ring" of the ball court.

We hopped back to our tricycle again and continued our way!

Our tour guide in his tricycle:

We had another stop by another temple, I liked the "layers" of it. Our tour guide helped us took a picture of us two :)

We hopped back to our tricycle again and next stop -  Nohuch Mul pyramid!!!

It was taller than I thought! At 138 feet high, this is the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula! There is a total of 120 steps and the steps were very narrow and steep so recommended to hold onto the rope when climbing the pyramid.

Alright..the time has come - time to climb!!!

Climbing up was not too bad, see I was still smiling!

Some of the steps were very slippery so be cautious!! Stop and rest if you need to and don't forget your water! We were almost there to the top!

We officially climbed the pyramid wohooo!!! I had my husband to take this picture because it was very steep and as I mentioned before, I am acrophobic!!!

We can see the whole jungle from up here since this is the tallest structure! The view was incredible!

After some rest to catch our breathe, we were ready to go back down! The way down was much harder than the way up!!!! My hubby got down very quickly and had fun taking picture of me....

It was harder for me to get down because I am scared of height ahhhh! I found an easier way which was by sitting on the step and go down step by step:

I finally got down yay! I was so thirsty and good that the locals were selling iced-cold bottle water there! The price was reasonable around 30 pesos for a big bottle!

On the way back out, we felt that our 75 pesos was well spent; after our pyramid climb, no way we want to walk the 1.5 miles back out!!!! A lot of our tour members who walked all the way to the pyramid ended up taking the tricycle back as well! We went back to our van and felt so good with AC!!

Just few minutes drive out of Coba, we stopped to have our lunch which was included in our tour price. We went in this very cute family run restaurant. The food just ready, it was buffet style as well, not as much choices as the one we had in Chichen Itza but the food was pretty good!

Soda was 10 pesos so not bad!

The restaurant had a souvenir shop too. I really like this picture, very colorful!

After our 45 minutes lunch, we were back to our van again and the drive to Tulum was about another 45 minutes. We stopped by a restaurant on the entrance of Tulum and used the restroom facility. The walk from the parking area to the entrance was around 10 minutes walk. By now, it was the afternoon so it was hot!!! We arrived at the entrance to the Tulum ruins, Tulum was surrounded by a wall:

Tulum! It was such a beautiful ruin! Tulum was the only "organized" city of the Mayans, there were streets instead of scattering around.

Map of Tulum from Charlie's map:

There were large iguanas all over Tulum!

Tulum was open area instead of inside a forest so good idea to have an umbrella :)

The structures in Tulum were gorgeous! Tulum is my favorite Mayan site out of the three we visited!

We had around 1.5 hours to freely explore the ruin. We headed to the beach area and the beach was beautiful!

This is what I called "paradise"!!

Postcard picture perfect spot:

There were a line of people here to take the postcard perfect picture! Finally our turn and this person urggg had his finger in our photo!

The view was absolutely the most beautiful in Cancun area!!!

More Tulum houses:

Our 1.5 hours went very fast with great views! I wish we had more time! Next trip, we'll definitely rent a car and come here again!

We got back to Cancun at around 7 pm. We took the bus to Bubba Gump for all-shrimp meal! We don't have this chain in Boston but we tried it out! The food was pretty good and reasonably priced since it was a chain restaurant. The sitting area outside was comfortable, don't forget inspect repellent!
